Cancer treatment units
Four wellbeing services counties operate in the Eastern collaborative area: the Wellbeing Services Counties of North Savo, Central Finland, North Karelia and South Savo. In total, the wellbeing services counties are responsible for the health and wellbeing services of 820 000 people. Approximately 5000 new cancers are diagnosed every year in the Eastern collaborative area.
Kuopio University Hospital, The Wellbeing Services County of North Savo
Kuopio University Hospital (KYS) is responsible for the specialized health care services in North Savo. In addition, it ensures the availability of university hospital -level services in the whole Eastern collaborative area.
The treatment of cancer patients is always planned individually and the treatment is often carried out in a multidisciplinary manner, during which it bring together the professional skills and expertise of multiple specialties. The planning and carrying out of cancer drug treatment of adult patients mainly take place in the Cancer Center, hematology and gynecological units, while radiotherapy takes place in the Cancer Center.

KYS Cancer Center
The KYS Cancer Center forms an entity which encompasses the units responsible for the treatment of cancer (diagnostics, treatment, follow-up) and research in the Wellbeing Services County of North Savo. In 2022, the center was awarded the OECI (Organisation of European Cancer Institutes) accreditation as one of the four cancer centers accredited in Finland. The OECI has determined a set of quality criteria for cancer treatment and research in its accreditation program, which are meant to develop and align the operations of units treating cancer.

Nova Hospital, The Wellbeing Services County of Central Finland
The oncology and radiotherapy department at Nova Hospital is responsible for all adult patient radiotherapy and cancer drug treatments in the wellbeing services county of Central Finland, as well as part of the radiotherapy treatment for patients in South Savo. Multidisciplinary working groups meet regularly at Nova Hospital, and take into account the individual needs of each cancer patient while utilizing the various fields of expertise. In addition, the modern gene sequencing method used in the pathology department enables the personal planning of cancer drug treatment.
Several national and international cancer treatment -related research studies are currently ongoing in the region. Collaborative research is done together with the University of Jyväskylä and the Biobank of Central Finland, among others.

NovaCan – Cancer Center
The purpose of NovaCan is to monitor, supervise and support the occurrence of early diagnostics, the effectiveness of cancer patient follow-up, as well as the quality of treatment of patients in palliative care in the primary and specialized healthcare of the whole wellbeing services county. In addition, NovaCan works in collaboration with the national cancer center and FICAN East.

Pohjois-Karjalan keskussairaala, Siun sote
Siun soten Syöpäkeskus vastaa Pohjois-Karjalan alueen asukkaiden syöpäsairauksien hoidosta. Syöpäkeskuksessa sijaitsevat ajanmukaiset lääkehoitoyksikkö, syöpätautien poliklinikka sekä sädehoitoyksikkö. Sairaalahoitoa tarvitsevia potilaita hoidetaan vuodeosastolla. Syövän hoito on moniammatillista yhteistyötä. Potilaita hoidetaan kansallisten ja kansainvälisten hoitosuositusten mukaisesti potilaan yksilölliset tarpeet huomioiden. Siun soten Syöpäkeskus ja Palliatiivinen keskus ovat ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology) akkreditoituja.

Mikkeli Central Hospital, The South Savo Wellbeing Services County
The oncology reception is responsible for the treatment of solid tumors and lymphomas in the Mikkeli region. The reception operates in the treatment center, which also includes the unit for drug treatments. The doctors working at the oncology reception plan the treatment of a patient, in addition to which they follow up on treatment effectiveness and any health problems caused by the illness and its treatment.
Savonlinna Central Hospital, The South Savo Wellbeing Services County
The Savonlinna Central Hospital is responsible for the diagnostics, treatment and follow-up of cancers in the Savonlinna region. A portion of the surgical treatments given to cancer patients are done in Savonlinna Central Hospital, but more challenging operative treatments are carried out in Mikkeli and Kuopio. Radiotherapy is mainly given at Kuopio University Hospital. The drug treatment of cancers is carried out at the Savonlinna Central Hospital unit for drug treatments and infusions. Monitoring of cancer patients is organized at specialized outpatient clinics in collaboration with the oncology outpatient clinic.
