Being diagnosed with cancer always has a large impact on the lives of the patient and those close to them. Getting cancer, recovering from it, and adapting to the life changes caused by it take time and energy. It is important for individuals with cancer and those close to them to take care of their own wellbeing.

Cancer often has negative effects on both mental and physical wellbeing. Because of this, it is important for individuals to look after their own rest, physical activity, nutrition and mental wellbeing. A well-supported body and mind support the recovery from treatments, and ensure good overall coping.

For carers and loved ones

When an individual is diagnosed with cancer, it often has a great impact on those close to them as well. Family and friends play a central role in the daily life of a cancer patient, and it is important for them to look after their own wellbeing as well. Help and support are available for carers and those close to cancer patients. It is good to openly raise the topic with treatment professionals, or to contact your own health care provider on the subject. The Cancer Society of Finland and regional cancer associations also provide comprehensive support for the family and friends of cancer patients.
