Rare Cancers Project

In 2022, FICAN South launched the Rare Cancers project in collaboration with FICAN Mid. The target groups of the project are patients with rare cancers and healthcare professionals. The aim of the project is to develop care pathways and medical treatment for patients with rare cancers, streamline the diagnosis of rare cancers, and improve patients’ access to care.

We have developed an operational model that best meets the needs and requirements of patients and professionals. The model improves the quality of care, treatment outcomes, and patient experiences for rare cancers. Additionally, we have established (here is the link to the Finnish website) national care guidelines for the diagnosis and monitoring of approximately 20 of the most common hereditary cancer syndromes.

Our goal is to establish a national-level advisory board for rare cancers. The project has expanded nationally, and we are moving it forward in collaboration with patients, cancer center clinicians, geneticists, and cancer organizations.
