Coordination of Cancer Treatment in the FICAN South Region
Cancer treatment requires multidisciplinary expertise and seamless teamwork among surgical, medical, radiotherapy, pathology, laboratory and imaging diagnostics, genetics, as well as palliative care and rehabilitation.
In the FICAN South region, the organizations responsible for patient care, including the HUS Group, the joint authority for Helsinki and Uusimaa, the Wellbeing Services County of Päijät-Häme, the Wellbeing Services County of Kymenlaakso, and the Wellbeing Services County of South Karelia, aim to provide patients with the best possible and continuously evolving care tailored individually.

FICAN South operates in conjunction with the HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center and collaborates with all cancer treatment providers. The cancer expertise at the HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center has been rated at the highest level in Europe. The HUS Cancer Center has achieved the status of a Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) from the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI).

Patients are offered counseling services, social and psychosocial support, and assistance. To listen to patient wishes and improve operations, the HUS Comrehensive Cancer Center has three patient and research advisory boards.

Cancer Treatment Facilities in the FICAN South Region
There are numerous specialized healthcare and primary care service units in the FICAN South region that treat cancer patients, depending on the type of cancer and its spread. The main forms of cancer treatment are surgery, radiotherapy, and various cancer drug therapies, which are provided to patients individually.
HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center contact information and units, Women’s Clinic, and Meilahti Triangle Hospital. Cancer surgeries are performed at several specialized surgical units. The most demanding abdominal surgeries are centralized at the HUS Abdominal Center. Urology patients are examined and treated at the HUS Abdominal Center units, Peijas Hospital, Meilahti Tower Hospital, as well as Hyvinkää, Lohja, and Porvoo hospitals. Gynecological cancer treatment is centralized at the Women’s Clinic in the HUS area. Orthopedic, traumatology, and neurosurgery patients are treated at Meilahti Bridge Hospital. Pediatric cancers are treated at the New Children’s Hospital. Eye tumors are treated at the specialized ophthalmology clinics of HUS Tammisairaala. Superficial skin tumors are treated at the Skin and Allergy Hospital.
Päijät-Häme Central Hospital
The Cancer Clinic offers individualized planning of cancer treatment, cancer drug therapy, follow-up, and support services. Services include diagnostics, treatment planning, drug therapy, and support for patients and their families. Contact information for the oncology outpatient clinic (in Finnish).
Specialized radiotherapy and pediatric radiotherapy are provided in collaboration with the HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Kymenlaakso Central Hospital
In Kymenlaakso, cancer treatment is centralized at Kymenlaakso Central Hospital, which houses the Cancer Clinic, treatment center, inpatient unit, and radiotherapy unit.
South Karelia Central Hospital
The cancer treatment unit at South Karelia Central Hospital includes the Cancer Clinic, symptom clinic, infusion unit, and radiotherapy unit.
Clinical Cancer Research
Clinical trials seeking participants are compiled on the website of the Finnish Medicines Agency (FIMEA). Information about ongoing clinical trials in Finland that are recruiting patients is provided at a general level. The information has been requested from researchers and study sponsors, and its submission is voluntary. The studies are grouped by disease.
The HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center is the largest clinical cancer research center in Finland, with over 150 studies conducted annually. The center carries out cancer treatment and cancer drug research both as academic research and in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. You can apply for clinical cancer drug research with a referral from a doctor.
