The mission of the Finnish Cancer Center (FICAN) is to implement the tasks defined in the centralisation decree, which include the nationwide planning and coordination of cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation. These responsibilities comprise e.g.:
- Planning cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation on a national level in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
- Promoting cancer-related research and development activities and integrating research more closely into cancer patient care.
- Developing recommendations & guidelines and creating effective and standardized care practices.
- Assessing the effectiveness, quality, and outcomes of cancer care activities.
Finnish Cancer Center and its coordinating unit are tasked with nationally advancing, implementing, and guiding these activities in close cooperation with the regional cancer centers. The primary role of the regional centers is to ensure the implementation of national recommendations and guidelines within their respective wellbeing service counties.
The promotion of FICAN’s objectives and the development of its operations are primarily carried out through national working groups and projects. This work is conducted in close collaboration with both national and international stakeholders and partners.
