Finnish Cancer Center FICAN

Finnish Cancer Center FICAN was established to address the specific challenges caused by cancer in Finland under the directive of the Centralization Decree. According to the decree, FICAN is responsible for the national planning and coordination of cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation, as well as ensuring strong foundations for research.

Finnish Cancer Center is a network formed by the wellbeing service counties, HUS, and medical universities. The partner organizations have formally expressed their shared commitment to harmonizing practices to achieve equitable cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Organization structure

FICAN works towards its goals through five regional cancer centers (FICAN South, FICAN East, FICAN West, FICAN North, and FICAN Mid) and a coordinating unit, which is responsible for planning and coordination of national activities.

The coordinating unit implements national decisions and oversees the center’s national activities and projects. Strategic decisions on national activities are made by the national management board, comprised of representatives from the partner organizations.

The regional cancer centers are tasked with planning and coordinating regional activities related to the decree’s objectives while ensuring alignment with national collaboration. Each regional cancer center is guided by a steering group, including representatives from the wellbeing service counties (HUS in Helsinki and Uusimaa area) and the regional medical university. More information on regional activities can be found on regional centers pages.

Our activities are guided by shared objectives and close collaboration with all relevant national and regional stakeholders involved in cancer prevention, care and research.
