“Ovarian Cancer Research” Event Brought the DECIDER Project Closer to Patients

Published 28.1.2026

The Discover Ovarian Cancer Research event, held in Turku on 21 January, provided patients, their families, and others interested with an opportunity to learn about current ovarian cancer research and to meet researchers and treating clinicians. The event was organised in a hybrid format, enabling participation both on site and remotely, with approximately 45 participants in total.

The event focused on the international DECIDER research project, which studies an aggressive form of ovarian cancer and aims to improve the precision of treatment selection. In the DECIDER project, multiple types of patient‑derived data—including tissue and blood samples, genomic data, imaging, and clinical information—are integrated to better understand why some cancers do not respond to standard treatments and how more effective treatment options could be identified.

During the evening, researchers and clinicians explained why ovarian cancer research is needed and how patient data and research samples are used in practice. The presentations described what happens to samples after collection, what they can reveal about the biology of cancer, and how research findings contribute to the development of more individualised treatment approaches.

The discussion session highlighted patients’ own questions and experiences, including topics such as cancer recurrence and the impact of different treatments on everyday life. Questions were addressed openly and in a practical manner, with careful attention to patient perspectives.

At the end of the event, participants had the opportunity to familiarise themselves more concretely with the research during a laboratory tour. The tour demonstrated how patient samples are analysed and how research data are generated in laboratory settings.

The event underscored the essential role of patient participation and research samples in ovarian cancer research. Patient‑derived data form the foundation for advancing research and developing future treatments.
