Abstract:
Does cholesterol-lowering with statins affect the risk of prostate cancer or the risk of dying of the disease? If so, what would be the mechanism? Are the possible cancer-related effects limited to prostate cancer only, or are they relevant to also other cancer types? In his talk professor Teemu Murtola will discuss the above questions and more based on his research using population-level epidemiological data, in vitro laboratory studies and ultimately randomised clinical trials.
More information about the speaker:
Professor Teemu Murtola works as the professor of Urology at Tampere University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology and Chief Physician at Tampere University Hospital, Department of Urology in Pirha. He leads the new Research Center, the Center for Cancer Eradication Research at Tampere University. His research group, Lipid metabolism as targetable weakness of prostate cancer, is a clinical research team with strong commitment to improve prostate cancer care through deeper understanding of biology underlying disease progression and treatment resistance. Their main focus is exploring the roles of lipid and cholesterol metabolism at different phases of prostate cancer progression. They use cell culture models to evaluate prostate cancer cell metabolism at various stages of disease development and treatment resistance. They also perform epidemiological studies using population-based datasets to evaluate how usage of drugs that appeared promising in cell culture models associate with prostate cancer risk and prognosis at population level. They also carry out investigator -initiated randomised clinical trials.
