The purpose of FICAN South is to coordinate the diagnostics and treatment of cancer as well as advance cancer research in the Southern Finland collaborative area. We works as a part of the Finnish cancer center FICAN in collaboration with the FICAN coordinating unit and other regional cancer centers operating in Finland. Together we creating a new type of operating model, which promotes high quality and up-to-date cancer treatment, as well as cancer research. Our mission (goal) is “Together against cancer”.

Goals and vision

The vision of FICAN South is to ensure first-class cancer diagnosis and personalized cancer treatment for each patient, as well as support translational research in the best interest of the patient.

The goal and purpose of FICAN South is to act as the integrating unit for regional cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as cancer research and educational development activities in the Southern Finland region. We are responsible for advancing the collaboration between the service system and universities in cancer research by concrete means, with our activities reaching beyond the boundaries of organizations and units.

Main goals of FICAN South

• Supporting the development of high-quality translational research
  Translational research combines the expertise of different scientific fields in order to develop more effective treatments and improve the well-being of patients.
• Supporting the diagnostics and treatment of cancer together with HUS units responsible for cancer treatment, the Southern Finland collaborative area, the University of Helsinki and other actors
• Supporting the preparation and updating of treatment guidelines, as well as the development of personal treatment
• Assessing the effectiveness of cancer treatments
• Identifying (recognize) and developing the need for individual support among patients
• Increasing the number of clinical cancer drug trials and innovations in the field of cancer
• Increasing national and international collaboration within the area of FICAN South
• Analyzing the potential barriers for achieving the goals listed above
  

Activity sub-areas

In line with its goals, FICAN South promotes cancer research and its application in cancer treatment and areas important for patient support, as well as supports the collaboration between clinical treatment and translational (combining basic and clinical research) researchers.
