Shared visions strengthened at event on personalized cancer medicine – more specific analysis of cancer plays a key role

Published 11.6.2026

The Personalized Cancer Care Day, organized in Helsinki on the 17th of April, brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, patient organization representatives and decision makers to discuss the development of cancer molecular profiling, Molecular Tumor Board (MTB) activities and equal treatment of cancer patients.

Key themes of the event included furthering in-depth understanding of cancer biology, as well as strengthening the role molecular profiling plays in supporting decisions in cancer treatment. Discussions highlighted the shared view that personalized cancer care requires nationally uniform practices, a functional MTB-network, as well as broad collaboration across organizational and regional boarders. More detailed biological analysis of cancer is needed in order to achieve better treatment outcomes, impactful research and sustainable decision-making.

During the event, speeches were heard from various experts including clinical oncology, molecular pathology and patient representatives. The day also included hearing results and experiences on implementing a national research model based on molecular profiling from the FINPROVE study. Most importantly, broad discussions were held among clinicians, diagnostics, patient organizations and decision-makers throughout the event.

During her speech, member of parliament Sari Sarkomaa brought forward the point of view of political decision-making, and highlighted the significance of cancer quality registries. High-quality and comprehensive registries are a necessity for tracking quality of treatment, assessing effectiveness and developing equal services.

In the event’s panel discussion, participants concluded that regional inequalities in cancer diagnostics and treatment are still a significant challenge. The shared message was clear: development of personalized cancer medicine requires long-term national alignment, sufficient resources and a shared knowledge base.

Next steps:
The event strengthened the shared will to take Finnish personalized cancer care forward in accordance with the goals set by the national cancer strategy. The work continues in the form of developing molecular profiling recommendations, MTB activities and research collaboration.
